A bespoke pantry is one of the smartest ways to add storage to a kitchen without losing valuable space elsewhere. Designed around the exact dimensions of the room and the way a household shops, cooks and stores food, it can take the form of a fitted pantry cupboard, a full-height larder cupboard or even a compact walk-in pantry created from an awkward corner or unused adjoining space.

We design and install bespoke pantries as part of our bespoke kitchen projects across Newcastle, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear. Whether the aim is to keep worktops clearer, organise a busy family kitchen or build in better pantry storage from the outset, the principle is the same: every shelf, drawer and internal detail should earn its place.

Pantry, larder or butler’s pantry: what is the difference?

The terms get used interchangeably, but they originally meant different things and the distinction still matters when planning.

Larder cupboard

A larder was traditionally a cool storage space for perishable food, usually positioned on a north-facing wall or in a naturally cooler part of the house. A modern fitted larder cupboard takes the same principle and applies it to a tall, full-depth cabinet within the kitchen run. Ours typically include pull-out wire baskets, adjustable shelving at varying depths and sometimes a small internal worktop for decanting.

Pantry cupboard

A pantry was historically for dry goods, bread, preserves and crockery. In a modern kitchen, a pantry cupboard tends to be a double-door tall unit that opens to reveal tiered shelving, spice racks on the inside of the doors and dedicated zones for different categories of item. When the doors close, it reads as part of the surrounding cabinetry.

Butler’s pantry

A butler’s pantry is a separate working area, usually between the kitchen and a dining or entertaining space. It typically includes its own worktop, sink, additional storage and sometimes a second fridge or wine cooler. We have designed butler’s pantries as part of larger kitchen and fitted living space projects where the client wants a prep and clearing-up area that can be closed off from the main room, keeping the kitchen itself clear during and after entertaining.

What makes a bespoke pantry different from a standard unit?

The difference comes down to three things: dimensions, internals and integration.

Built to the room

A standard tall larder unit from a kitchen manufacturer comes in fixed widths and depths. In older properties across the North East, wall thicknesses, ceiling heights and floor levels vary enough that a standard unit rarely fits without filler panels or wasted space above. A bespoke pantry is built to the exact dimensions of the opening, which means the shelving runs the full width, the unit sits flush with the ceiling line and there are no dead gaps at the sides.

Internals designed around contents

Off-the-shelf larder cupboards come with evenly spaced shelves. A bespoke pantry can have shelves at different depths and heights depending on what goes where.

Taller sections for cereal boxes and oil bottles. Shallower shelves at eye level for spice jars and everyday ingredients. Pull-out drawers at the base for heavier items like bags of flour or tins. Door-mounted racks for smaller bottles and condiments. Every shelf position is set during the design stage based on a conversation about what actually needs to be stored.

Flush with the cabinetry

When a bespoke pantry is part of a fitted kitchen, the door fronts, handle spacing, colour and finish all match the surrounding joinery. There is no visual distinction between the pantry doors and the rest of the kitchen. The panel finish, grain direction and shadow gaps carry through so the storage disappears into the room rather than standing apart from it.

Walk-in pantries

A walk-in pantry does not need as much space as most people assume. In our experience, a footprint of roughly 1.2 metres by 1.8 metres is enough for shelving on two or three walls with a clear standing area in the centre. That is roughly the size of a small cupboard or the end section of a utility room.

The advantage of a walk-in is visibility. Everything is at eye level or within reach, arranged across open shelving rather than stacked behind a single door. It also creates a natural separation between the kitchen and the storage, which helps keep worktops clear.

From a fitting perspective, ventilation matters. A walk-in pantry stores ambient food in an enclosed space, so we factor in airflow during the design. That might mean a small vent to an external wall or simply ensuring the door is not fully sealed. Standard food safety guidance recommends storing dry food in cool, dry, well-ventilated conditions, which is straightforward to achieve with a bit of planning at the design stage. We have created walk-in pantries from unused corners, redundant hallway cupboards, sections of utility rooms and even under-stair storage areas that were previously dead space.

Pantry storage in smaller kitchens

Not every kitchen has room for a walk-in or a double-door larder. But a bespoke approach means pantry storage can be fitted into spaces that a standard unit cannot reach.

Pull-out tall larders

A single tall unit, sometimes as narrow as 300mm depending on the manufacturer, with pull-out internal shelving on both sides can hold a surprising amount. Because everything slides out towards you, nothing gets lost at the back. We fit these into gaps between appliance housings, at the end of a run or in narrow spaces beside a fridge.

Corner pantry solutions

Deep corner units are one of the most wasted spaces in a standard kitchen. A bespoke carousel or pull-out corner system can turn that dead zone into accessible, organised storage. The key is designing the internal mechanism around the specific angle and depth of the corner rather than forcing a standard fitting into it.

Integrated pantry within the cabinetry run

In some kitchens, the best approach is a section of the wall units dedicated to pantry storage, with deeper-than-standard shelving behind matched doors. From the outside it looks like any other section of the kitchen. Inside, it is laid out specifically for food storage with zones, varying shelf depths and door-mounted racks.

If you are weighing up different storage approaches, our guide to clever kitchen storage ideas covers some of the other options that work well alongside a pantry.

Getting the internal layout right

The internal layout is where a bespoke pantry earns its value. Getting it right starts with what actually needs to be stored rather than shelf positions.

We typically work through it with clients during the design stage by asking them to think about their weekly shop, their cooking habits and the items that currently have no proper home in the kitchen. That might include bulk dry goods, small appliances like a stand mixer or bread maker, serving dishes that only come out when entertaining, or everyday breakfast items that need to be accessible every morning.

From there, the shelf depths, drawer positions, pull-out trays and door-mounted storage are all set to suit. Adjustable shelving is worth including in at least part of the pantry so the layout can adapt over time as habits change.

The details that tend to make the biggest difference are small ones: a built-in power socket inside the pantry for charging a hand vac or running a coffee machine behind closed doors, LED strip lighting that comes on when the door opens, and shelf lips or retaining bars that stop jars sliding when a pull-out tray is extended.

Why the pantry decision belongs early in the design

A pantry works best when it is planned as part of the kitchen layout from the start. Trying to add one after the rest of the design is set usually means compromising on depth, position or internal access.

When we know early that a pantry is part of the brief, we can position it in relation to the main prep area, make sure the door swing does not conflict with other traffic routes, and design the internal layout around the storage that has been displaced from elsewhere in the kitchen. It also means the external doors, panels and handles can be ordered as part of the same cabinetry run, so the finish is consistent throughout.

Open-plan kitchen living rooms change how a home works. Instead of cooking in a separate room while the family gathers elsewhere, everything happens in one space. Meals, homework, conversation, entertaining. The kitchen becomes the centre of the house rather than a room you disappear into. The difference between an open-plan space that works and one that doesn’t comes down to how it’s planned.

When the kitchen becomes part of the main living area, everything is on show. Cooking noise, smells, lighting levels and storage all affect how the room feels day to day. Get those decisions right early and the space becomes the natural centre of the house. Get them wrong and it never quite settles.

Will Open-Plan Work for Your Household?

Open plan living suits households where the kitchen is already the gathering point. If meals, conversation and daily routines revolve around the kitchen, removing separation can make the space feel more connected and sociable.

It is less successful in homes where schedules clash. A dishwasher running while someone is watching television a few metres away. Early morning cooking when someone else needs quiet. These issues are manageable, but only if they are considered before any building work begins.

An honest conversation about how the room will actually be used is more important than any layout sketch.

Knocking Through, Extending, or Both

There are usually two routes to creating an open plan kitchen living room.

Knocking through removes the wall between the existing kitchen and the adjoining room. In most North East properties that wall is load-bearing, which means a structural beam and building control approval. The overall footprint stays the same, but the space feels significantly larger.

Extending at the rear adds square metreage and flexibility. Many single-storey extensions fall under permitted development, though this depends on the property and location. An extension allows for larger islands, better circulation and clearer zoning between kitchen and living areas.

Some projects combine both approaches. Removing the internal wall and extending at the rear produces the most dramatic transformation, but it also requires careful coordination of structural work, electrics and installation sequencing.

Open Plan Kitchen Living Room Layout Ideas

Certain layouts work consistently in the room sizes most homeowners are dealing with.

An island layout places kitchen units along one wall with an island projecting into the room. The island becomes a natural divider between kitchen and living areas. If the hob is positioned on the island, you face into the room while cooking, which makes the space feel more social.

An L-shaped layout works well in squarer rooms. Units run along two adjacent walls, leaving space for a dining table and a defined seating area. This approach prevents the kitchen from dominating the entire room.

A peninsula suits narrower spaces. Attached to one wall, it creates division without restricting circulation. It offers seating and preparation space while keeping the layout efficient.

In homes with a chimney breast, the breast can anchor the kitchen area. A cooker positioned within the recess feels natural, and the structure itself provides subtle zoning between cooking and living areas.

Why Extraction Is the Most Important Decision in Open Plan

Extraction is the most important technical decision in an open plan kitchen.

Traditionally, extraction was calculated by working out the cubic metreage of the room and specifying a canopy hood powerful enough to clear that volume of air. In large open plan spaces, that approach becomes unrealistic unless you install a very large and visually dominant extractor.

We prefer downdraft hobs from manufacturers such as AEG and Bora. These systems draw steam and cooking smells downwards at source rather than relying on overhead capture. Because extraction happens immediately at hob level, smells are contained more effectively.

Downdraft systems also sit below ear level within the base cabinetry, which makes them noticeably quieter. They allow you to face into the room while cooking, and they avoid breaking sightlines with a large canopy hood.

Many models can recirculate filtered air back into the room, which means the heat you have paid for is not constantly vented outside. In a large open plan space, that makes a practical difference.

With the correct system specified, there should be no need to open windows to clear everyday cooking smells.

Managing Noise in an Open Plan Kitchen Living Room

In an open plan space, appliance noise carries further.

Dishwashers, washing machines and even boiling kettles become part of the living area environment. Checking decibel ratings when selecting appliances is important. Small differences on paper are noticeable in daily use.

Soft furnishings also play a role. Rugs, upholstered seating and curtains reduce echo and absorb sound, preventing the room from feeling hard and overly reflective.

Good design is not just about how the space looks, but how it sounds when people are using it.

Zoning Without Walls

An open plan kitchen living room still needs clear zones.

Flooring is one of the most effective tools. Tile or luxury vinyl in the kitchen area combined with engineered wood or carpet in the living zone creates a subtle psychological shift between functions.

Lighting should be layered. Task lighting over worktops, pendant lighting above a dining table and dimmable ambient lighting in the seating area allow different moods within the same space. Separate circuits ensure the kitchen can remain bright while the living area is softened in the evening.

Furniture also defines boundaries. The back of a sofa facing the kitchen can be enough to create separation without closing off the room.

TV Placement in Open Plan Spaces

Television placement needs careful thought.

Ideally, the TV should sit on the wall furthest from the kitchen, facing the main seating area. This ensures the living zone feels settled rather than like an extension of the cooking space.

If room proportions make that difficult, angling the sofa perpendicular to the kitchen can help. The goal is to prevent the TV from competing visually with the kitchen as the dominant feature in the room.

Building Work and Coordination

Removing a load-bearing wall requires structural calculations and building control approval. This is essential for safety, insurance and future resale.

Extensions may fall under permitted development, but conservation areas, listed properties and previous alterations can change what is allowed. Assumptions are risky. Early checks prevent delays later.

Open plan projects involve structural work, electrics, plumbing, plastering and kitchen installation. The sequencing matters. Finishing walls and then cutting back into them for wiring adds cost and compromises the finish.

Running the project as a managed process from design through to completion reduces stress and keeps quality consistent.

Thinking Beyond the Kitchen

Think about how your household actually functions. Where does the TV need to sit? Can everyone tolerate kitchen noise in the living area? How much storage are you losing by removing a wall of cupboards, and where does that storage relocate? Will the person who cooks most enjoy being part of the room rather than separate from it?

The best open-plan kitchen living rooms resolve all of these questions before any building work begins. If you’re planning a renovation across multiple rooms, considering how the kitchen-living space connects to hallways, utility areas, and the rest of the house often reveals opportunities that single-room planning misses.

If you’re considering open-plan for your home, we’d welcome the chance to visit and talk through your kitchen living room ideas. We’ll look at the space, discuss what’s possible, and give you honest advice on what will work for how you live.

The media walls that look best aren’t the ones with the most features. They’re the ones where the TV, storage, lighting and joinery all feel like they belong to the room. Nothing looks added or trails. Nothing was worked out after the fact. That comes down to planning the practical details first: what equipment the wall needs to house, where power and cables run, how storage is organised, and how the proportions relate to the room itself. Get those decisions right early and the finished wall looks properly integrated. Skip them and you spend the life of the wall managing cables, hiding boxes, and working around things that don’t quite fit. What Makes a Media Wall Feel Built In A media wall feels built in when it reads as part of the house, not as furniture placed against a wall. The TV sits at the right height, the joinery lines are consistent, and storage is where it’s actually useful rather than where it was easiest to build.

What Makes a Media Wall Feel Built In

A media wall feels built in when it reads as part of the house, not as furniture placed against a wall. The TV sits at the right height, the joinery lines are consistent, and storage is where it’s actually useful rather than where it was easiest to build.

Four things determine whether it works:

Proportion and alignment. A clear centre line and balanced spacing so the wall has visual weight without feeling heavy.

A proper plan for power and cables. Sockets positioned behind the TV and inside equipment zones, with cable routes planned between them. No trailing leads.

Storage designed around real items. Routers, consoles, soundbars, remotes, chargers. Not generic shelves hoping things will fit.

Lighting that adds depth. Subtle enough to create atmosphere without reflecting on the screen.

If your aim is a calm, cohesive living space rather than a statement piece, it helps to approach the media wall as part of the room’s overall design. That’s how we approach our bespoke living spaces, where storage, finishes and layout are considered together.

Plan the Invisible Details First

The best-looking media walls start with the things you can’t see. Before thinking about shelves or finishes, list everything the wall needs to accommodate and what each item requires.

A typical list:

TV and bracket

Soundbar or speakers

Set-top box or streaming device

Games console

Router or mesh node

LED drivers and control boxes

Fireplace, if you’re including one

Once you know what lives in the wall, you can decide where each item sits, where sockets go, and how cables route between zones. That planning is what prevents a media wall becoming a patchwork of afterthoughts.

Power, Sockets and Cable Routes

You don’t need to be an electrician to plan this well, but you do need to be clear about what you want. A tidy media wall typically needs sockets and data points in two locations: behind the TV for power and connections, and inside a ventilated storage area for boxes, consoles and routers.

It also needs a sensible cable route between the two, so you’re not feeding HDMI leads through improvised holes or squeezing them behind plasterboard.

If electrical work is part of the build, it must be safe and compliant. Approved Document P covers electrical safety in dwellings and is a useful reference for understanding why hidden wiring still requires proper planning and testing.

Cable Management That Lasts

Media walls shouldn’t be designed solely for today’s equipment. TVs change, soundbars change, and what you connect now may not be what you connect in two years.

The principles are straightforward: leave space for slightly larger equipment than you currently own, provide access to cables without dismantling the wall, maintain a clear route for additional cables if needed later, and avoid sealing everything behind fixed panels with no access point.

This is the difference between a media wall that looks right on day one and one that still feels easy to live with years later.

Storage That Works Day to Day

A media wall is often the primary built-in storage in a living room. If storage is treated as an afterthought, everyday items accumulate on shelves and surfaces, which quickly undermines the clean look the wall was designed to achieve.

Before committing to open niches, consider what needs to be concealed: controllers, remotes, chargers. Router, set-top box, consoles. Toys, blankets, board games. The small items that inevitably gather in a living room.

Closed storage doesn’t have to feel heavy. Flush doors, clean lines, and consistent proportions keep it calm and refined. Open shelving works well when it’s curated rather than overloaded.

If you’re working with unusual dimensions or awkward spaces, our approach to bespoke under-stair storage illustrates how considered joinery turns otherwise dead space into something genuinely useful. The same thinking applies to media wall storage.

Including a Fireplace

A fireplace can anchor a media wall and settle the room. It also introduces technical requirements that need proper attention, particularly around clearances, heat management and ventilation.

Manufacturer requirements. Every fireplace specifies clearances, airflow and installation conditions. The media wall needs to be designed around those parameters, not adapted to fit afterwards.

Ventilation for equipment. Consoles and boxes generate heat. If they’re enclosed, the joinery should allow heat to escape through ventilation gaps and sensible spacing, not by cramming everything into the tightest possible void.

Access for maintenance. If you can’t reach sockets, switches or connections, simple tasks become frustrating. A built-in wall still needs to be serviceable.

The aim is a wall that looks seamless but functions as a properly engineered piece of fitted joinery.

Getting the Proportions Right

People often ask for rules, such as the ideal TV height. In practice, comfort depends on your sofa height, your viewing distance, and how you sit. The best approach is to test the design in your actual room.

A simple method: mark the TV outline on the wall using painter’s tape. If you’re including a fireplace, mark that too. Sit down in the main seating positions and see how it feels. Adjust before anything is built.

This matters particularly in homes where rooms are shaped by chimney breasts, alcoves, or walls that aren’t perfectly straight. Those characteristics aren’t problems, but they do affect symmetry and sightlines, so they’re worth designing around from the outset.

Joinery Details That Create the Built-In Effect

The difference between a media wall that looks bespoke and one that looks assembled is usually in the detailing. It doesn’t require complexity, just clean decisions and consistent lines.

What typically matters: consistent reveals and gaps around doors and panels. Alignment between TV, fireplace and shelving. A clear relationship between vertical and horizontal elements. Finishes that complement the room rather than competing with it.

If you’re thinking about how different areas of the home connect visually, our guide to creating flow in the home covers the same principles at a wider scale.

Lighting

Lighting is one of the most effective ways to lift a media wall, provided it stays subtle. The aim is depth and warmth, not brightness.

A layered approach works best: ambient lighting for evenings, accent lighting inside niches or shelving, and task lighting elsewhere in the room where you actually need it.

Position lights carefully to avoid reflecting on the TV screen. If the TV surface catches glare, the whole wall becomes less comfortable to use, regardless of how well the rest is designed.

Build Sequencing

A media wall can involve multiple trades: electrics, plastering, joinery, and sometimes fireplace installation. Sequencing matters because finishing surfaces and then cutting into them for wiring creates unnecessary cost and compromise.

If the media wall sits within a wider renovation, coordination becomes more important still. Our article on whole-home renovation planning covers how timing and sequencing across trades affects cost, quality and stress.

For a single team managing design through to installation, our Living service brings joinery, layout and finish together as one project.

Making It Work Long Term

The best built-in media wall ideas are the ones that start with how you use the room. Plan the TV position, equipment storage, power and cable routes, ventilation and access first, and the finished look becomes far easier to achieve. The result is a media wall that feels part of the house, stays tidy, and still works when your technology changes.

You’ve just bought a house that needs everything doing. The kitchen’s stuck in 1975, there’s one tiny bathroom for four bedrooms, and you’re standing in the hallway thinking ‘where do I even start?’ Every room screams for attention, you’ve got a renovation budget that needs stretching across kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms, and the paralysis is real.

Here’s the framework: tackle services-first rooms (kitchen and bathrooms) before aesthetic rooms (bedrooms and living spaces), decide whether all-at-once or phased suits your budget and living situation, then allocate budget intelligently with kitchen as priority investment and contingency for surprises.

This guide walks through whole-home renovation planning specific to North East properties, covering sequencing frameworks, realistic timelines, and the critical choice between coordinating trades yourself or using a single design-to-completion team.

Where to Start When Everything Needs Doing

Start with the rooms that affect how you live daily, not the ones that look worst.

The services-first principle means prioritising kitchen and bathrooms over bedrooms, living rooms, or decorative updates. You use your kitchen and bathroom multiple times every day, their condition affects your quality of life immediately, and they’re structurally complex (plumbing, electrics, ventilation, building regulations). Getting these right creates a functional baseline for everything else.

Living in a house with a functioning kitchen and decent bathroom but dated bedrooms is manageable. Living in a beautifully decorated house where the boiler’s temperamental and the shower dribbles is miserable.

All-at-Once vs Phased Renovation: Which Approach Suits Your Situation?

This is the first major decision, and it hinges on three factors: budget availability, living arrangements, and disruption tolerance.

All-at-once renovation means tackling kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms in one continuous project, typically 10–16 weeks. Advantages: lower overall cost (mobilisation happens once), faster completion, guaranteed design cohesion across all rooms, and one period of disruption instead of multiple phases. Challenges: requires full budget available immediately and tolerance for building site conditions.

Phased renovation means completing rooms sequentially, often with gaps between phases. Kitchen first, then bathrooms, then bedrooms, spaced over 6–18 months. Advantages: spreads cost over longer period, less simultaneous disruption, ability to learn from first phase before committing to next. Challenges: higher total cost (each phase has separate mobilisation), longer overall timeline, and harder to maintain design cohesion.

Choose all-at-once if: You have full budget available now, you can tolerate 12–16 weeks of intensive disruption, you want the house ‘done’ before moving in properly, or you value design cohesion highly.

Choose phased if: Budget needs spreading over 12–24 months, you’re already living in the house and can’t decamp for months, or you want flexibility in final specifications.

Most families renovating newly purchased properties in Newcastle and Northumberland choose all-at-once. The psychological relief of moving into a ‘finished’ house rather than a multi-year project is substantial.

The Services-First Sequencing Framework

For all-at-once projects:

Kitchen and utility room happen first, setting the material palette for the rest of the house. Main bathroom and ensuite follow immediately, sharing similar trades (plumber, electrician, tiler). Bedrooms come third because they’re simpler (no building regulations, less structural work). Living spaces and decorative work finish the project. Total timeline: 12–16 weeks.

For phased projects:

Phase 1: Kitchen (6–8 weeks) – where you spend most waking time. Phase 2: Main bathroom (4–5 weeks). Phase 3: Ensuite or second bathroom if needed. Phase 4: Bedrooms (3–4 weeks per room). Phase 5: Living spaces (variable).

This sequencing isn’t arbitrary. Plumbing and electrical work is disruptive and messy. Do it early whilst you’re tolerating disruption anyway, not after you’ve decorated the house beautifully. Structural work (removing walls, installing beams) affects multiple rooms, so coordinate it in phase one.

Budget Allocation Across Multiple Rooms

Think about budget allocation based on value and complexity, not equal distribution across rooms.

Kitchen takes the largest share – typically the most expensive single room combining bespoke joinery, appliances, worktops, plumbing, electrics, often structural work. This is your primary investment.

Bathrooms follow – particularly if you’re adding a second bathroom or updating multiple wet rooms. Two bathrooms together cost less than doing them separately.

Bedrooms receive what remains – fitted wardrobes, flooring, redecoration. These are simpler projects without building regulations or complex services.

Contingency is non-negotiable – set aside 10–15% for unexpected issues. Rotten floor joists, outdated wiring, asbestos removal, structural surprises appear in every renovation of properties over 40 years old.

Adjust based on priorities. If you’re serious cooks, weight budget towards kitchen. If you have young children and bathrooms are critical, prioritise those. The key is understanding that not all rooms cost the same or deliver equal value.

Common mistakes: underfunding contingency, equal allocation across rooms, and forgetting professional fees (building regulations approval, structural engineer, designer).

Timeline Expectations

For a typical three-bedroom North East property, expect 3–4 months for all-at-once approach, or up to 15 months for phased approach.

All-at-once projects move through design, strip-out, installation, and finishing in a continuous sequence. The first few weeks are the most disruptive (demolition, structural work, first-fix plumbing and electrics), followed by plastering, tiling, and fitting, then finishing with worktops, decoration and snagging. Always add buffer time for structural discoveries, material delays, or specification changes.

Phased projects spread the same work over a longer calendar period with gaps between rooms. Kitchen comes first, then bathrooms, then bedrooms. The work itself takes similar time, but the gaps between phases (driven by budget availability or contractor scheduling) extend the total project to 12–15 months.

Living Arrangements During Renovation

Can you live in a house during full renovation? Yes, but it requires planning.

For all-at-once renovations: seal off one bedroom as clean retreat, use existing bathroom until final week, set up temporary kitchen (kettle, microwave, camping stove). Most families find 12 weeks manageable if they know the end date. Alternatively, move out completely (cleanest solution but adds cost) or partial occupation (live upstairs whilst downstairs renovated, then reverse).

For phased renovations, staying in the house is easier but prolonged. One room unusable at a time, but you’re living through sequential building projects for months.

Daily cleanup matters. Professional contractors clean and tidy every evening before leaving. This is the difference between tolerable disruption and living in chaos.

Single Team vs Multiple Contractors

Single team approach: One company provides design across all rooms, coordinates all trades, manages Building Control, and takes responsibility for the finished result.
Advantages: design cohesion, efficient trade sequencing, single-point accountability.

Multiple contractor approach: You hire separate specialists and coordinate everything yourself. Potential cost saving, but you’re project managing full-time. Design cohesion becomes your problem, trade sequencing errors cause delays, and finger-pointing happens when something goes wrong.

The hidden cost of DIY coordination is your time and stress. Over 20 years coordinating whole-home renovations across Newcastle, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear, single-team projects consistently finish faster with better design cohesion. Design-to-completion service means one phone number and single point of contact throughout.

Design Cohesion: Creating a Unified Vision

Choose a consistent material palette across all rooms. Kitchen worktop stone echoes bathroom vanity stone. Kitchen cabinet colour picks up accent colour from bedroom wardrobes. Small material decisions made consistently create coherence.

Apply one metalwork finish throughout (brushed nickel, polished chrome, matt black, or brushed brass) to kitchen taps, bathroom taps, shower fixtures, door handles, and cabinet knobs. Mixing metallic finishes looks uncoordinated.

Phased renovations risk design drift. Your ‘perfect’ kitchen colour in February might look dated by August when choosing bathroom tiles. Solution: make all material and colour decisions upfront before any phase starts, even if implementation happens over months.

Making Whole-Home Renovation Work

Transforming a tired property is achievable with clear framework: prioritise services (kitchen and bathrooms) before aesthetics, decide all-at-once or phased based on budget and tolerance for disruption, allocate budget based on value not equal distribution, and either commit to managing multiple trades yourself or use a design-to-completion team.

The paralysis most people feel standing in that dated hallway comes from seeing everything at once. Break it into sequenced decisions. Which rooms affect daily life most? Kitchen and bathrooms. Which approach suits your cashflow? All-at-once if you have budget now, phased if you need to spread cost. Who coordinates the work? You if you have time and experience, or a single team if you value design cohesion and your sanity.

Why Built-In Wardrobes Work Better in Small Bedrooms

If your bedroom is small, say, 9ft x 10ft or a narrow box room, you might worry that a built-in wardrobe will make it feel even more cramped. The opposite is usually true.

Freestanding wardrobes waste space in small rooms

A typical IKEA PAX or high street wardrobe typically sits 10–15cm away from the wall (skirting boards, uneven walls), leaves gaps at the sides (rarely fits wall-to-wall), stops below the ceiling (wasted vertical storage), and creates visual clutter with visible legs, backs, and awkward corners.

Built-in wardrobes use every centimetre

For example, they run floor-to-ceiling to maximise storage height. Because they fit wall-to-wall, there are no gaps and the finish looks clean and intentional. Inaddition, bespoke designs can build around chimney breasts and alcoves, turning problems into features. As a result, messy internals stay hidden behind unified doors and the room feels calmer. Finally, they can be wall-hung or fitted flush to the skirting, so you free up floor space with no furniture “legs” eating into the room.

The result? More actual storage capacity, a visually calmer room, and often a surprising feeling of more space, because everything is contained, organised, and intentional rather than scattered across multiple pieces of furniture.

At Kevin Richardson Bespoke, we design and install fitted bedrooms across Newcastle, Northumberland, and Tyne and Wear, specialising in small, awkward rooms where off-the-shelf furniture simply doesn’t work.

Layout Ideas for Small Bedrooms: Box Rooms, Narrow Rooms & Awkward Spaces

The best wardrobe layout depends on your room shape, bed size, and how much hanging versus drawer storage you need. Here are the layouts that work best for different North East property types.

Box Rooms (Roughly Square, 8ft x 9ft to 9ft x 10ft)

Option 1: Single Wall Run

Wardrobe along one full wall, floor-to-ceiling, with sliding or hinged doors. Bed opposite or perpendicular. This works well if you need maximum hanging space and the room is used purely for sleeping.

Option 2: L-Shaped Layout

Wardrobes along two adjacent walls, creating a corner unit. The bed fits into the remaining space. This is great for rooms with a window on one wall, you maximise storage whilst keeping natural light flowing through the room.

Option 3: Dressing Room Conversion

Remove the bed entirely and use the box room as a walk-in dressing area with open shelving, hanging rails, shoe storage, and a mirror. This is perfect if you have another bedroom for sleeping and need organised wardrobe space more than you need a spare bed.

Narrow Bedrooms (Long, Thin Rooms: 7ft Wide x 12ft+ Long)

Best approach: A single wardrobe run along the short wall, floor-to-ceiling and full width. This avoids making the room feel like a corridor. Use sliding doors to save floor space, and place the bed lengthways down the room.

Avoid: Wardrobes down the long wall. This makes narrow rooms feel even narrower and creates awkward bed placement with no space to walk around.

Small Double Bedrooms (9ft x 11ft to 10ft x 12ft)

Typical layout: Wardrobe along one wall, double bed opposite or on an adjacent wall. You need a minimum clearance of 60–70cm between the bed and wardrobe doors for comfortable movement, enough space to get dressed without feeling squeezed.

Sliding vs hinged doors: Sliding doors save approximately 50–60cm of swing space, which can be the difference between fitting a double bed or only a small double. Hinged doors need clearance but feel more accessible when you’re getting dressed in a hurry.

Can You Fit a Wardrobe and a King-Size Bed in a Small Room?

It’s tight, but possible in rooms 10ft x 11ft or larger. You’ll need sliding wardrobe doors to save swing space, and you’ll have to sacrifice bedside tables or keep them very minimal. Honestly, most small bedrooms work better with a double or small double bed if you want substantial wardrobe storage. It’s about prioritising what matters most, sleeping space or storage space.

Designing Built-In Wardrobes Around Chimney Breasts, Eaves & Alcoves

North East properties, especially Victorian terraces and 1930s semis, come with architectural features that make freestanding wardrobes impossible. Built-in solutions turn these ‘problems’ into design features.

Chimney Breasts

Victorian and Edwardian terraces often have chimney breasts in bedrooms, typically a projection of 20–30cm into the room, right where you’d ideally want to put a wardrobe.

Solution: Build alcove wardrobes on either side of the chimney breast. Use the breast itself for shelving, a dressing table area, or leave it as a feature with artwork or a mirror. Bridging units across the top create continuous storage without losing the character of the room. You end up with more storage than a single straight wardrobe would give you, and the room keeps its period charm.

Sloped Ceilings & Under-Eaves (Dormer Bedrooms, Loft Conversions)

Freestanding wardrobes can’t follow sloped ceilings, you lose all the under-eaves space, which in a small room is wasteful.

Solution: Stepped or angled built-in wardrobes that follow the ceiling line exactly. Use the tallest section for full-height hanging (dresses, coats), mid-height sections for drawers or shelving, and low sections for shoe storage or folded items. Every single centimetre becomes usable. We’ve turned awkward loft bedrooms into surprisingly spacious storage solutions using this approach.

Alcoves (Either Side of a Window or Door)

Alcoves are often too narrow or shallow for standard freestanding wardrobes. As a result, they end up as wasted space with a chair or laundry basket dumped in the corner.

Solution: Custom-width wardrobes fitted exactly into alcoves. These can be shallow, 30–40cm deep, perfect for shoe storage, folded clothes, or shelving. Still far more useful than leaving the space empty or trying to squeeze in an ill-fitting unit that looks bodged.

Radiators

Radiators often sit exactly where you’d ideally place a wardrobe, and moving them feels like a big job.

Solution: Build the wardrobe around the radiator with a ventilated panel or grille at the base, allowing heat to circulate properly. Alternatively, move the radiator to an adjacent wall, it requires a plumber, but it’s often worth it for layout flexibility.

See our fitted bedrooms for examples of how we’ve solved awkward spaces across the North East, chimney breasts, eaves, alcoves, the lot.

Understanding Built-In Wardrobe Investment

Built-in wardrobes represent a significant investment in your home, reflecting the bespoke nature of the work, quality of materials, and complexity of your specific room. Every wardrobe we design is tailored to your space, so costs vary considerably based on your requirements.

What Influences Your Investment

Room complexity

Straight walls are more straightforward to fit. However, chimney breasts, alcoves, and sloped ceilings need extra design time and skilled fitting to turn architectural challenges into storage opportunities.

Internal configuration

Basic hanging rails and shelves form the foundation. Fromthere, soft-close drawers, pull-out shoe racks, adjustable shelving, and sensor-activated LED lighting add function and convenience in day-to-day use.

Door style and finish

Hinged doors are simpler than sliding mechanisms. Meanwhile, mirrored doors can add visual space. Premium finishes like painted or wood veneer offer more character than standard melamine or laminate.

The IKEA PAX Comparison

An IKEA PAX wardrobe, 2.4m wide with standard internals, costs approximately £600–£1,000 supply-only. Add £200–£400 if you hire someone to assemble it (which many people do, because it’s fiddly and time-consuming). It’ll typically last 5–10 years, won’t fit your room perfectly, and has limited resale value. When you move, it either stays behind or gets dismantled. Reassembling flat-pack furniture that’s already been built once is a nightmare.

A bespoke built-in wardrobe is a larger upfront investment, but consider what you’re getting: furniture that lasts 20+ years with quality materials, fits your exact room including all the awkward features, maximises storage capacity by using every centimetre, and genuinely appeals to buyers. Fitted storage is one of the first things buyers notice in small bedrooms. Over its lifetime, the cost-per-year is often lower than replacing flat-pack furniture every decade, and the daily experience is incomparably better.

If you’re staying in your home for the foreseeable future and have a small bedroom that needs proper storage, a built-in wardrobe is typically one of the best investments you can make. It improves your daily life every single morning when you get dressed, and it makes the room feel calmer and more intentional the moment you walk in.

For an accurate quote tailored to your specific room and requirements, contact us for a consultation. We’ll measure your space, discuss layout options, and provide a transparent quotation with no pressure and no hidden costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are built-in wardrobes worth it in a small bedroom?

Yes, if you’re staying in your home for 3–5+ years. They maximise storage by using floor-to-ceiling space, fit awkward features like chimney breasts and alcoves perfectly, and make small rooms feel larger through streamlined, clutter-free design. They also appeal to buyers, which freestanding furniture doesn’t.

Will a built-in wardrobe make my tiny bedroom feel smaller?

Not if it’s designed well. Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes in light colours with mirrored doors and good lighting actually make small bedrooms feel larger by reducing visual clutter and reflecting light around the room. The key is avoiding dark, heavy finishes and making sure the wardrobe feels intentional, not like an afterthought.

Can you fit a built-in wardrobe and a double bed in a 9ft x 10ft room?

Yes, but it’s tight. You’ll need sliding wardrobe doors to save swing space, and you’ll have minimal room for bedside furniture. A small double bed (4ft wide) works better than a standard double (4ft 6in) in very small rooms. It’s about prioritising, do you need sleeping space or storage space more?

How much storage can you fit in a small built-in wardrobe?

A 2.4m-wide, floor-to-ceiling wardrobe typically holds 1.2m of full-height hanging, 1.2m of double-height hanging, 4–6 internal drawers, adjustable shelving, and shoe storage for 12–20 pairs. That’s typically 50–100% more capacity than freestanding furniture occupying the same floor space, because you’re using the full height of the room and eliminating gaps.

Transform Your Bedroom with Built-In Storage

If you’re struggling with a tiny bedroom, box room, or awkward space in Newcastle, Northumberland, or Tyne and Wear, a bespoke built-in wardrobe could be the solution you need. Kevin Richardson Bespoke specialises in small-room storage, designing fitted wardrobes around chimney breasts, eaves, and alcoves that turn wasted space into organised, functional storage.

When it comes to creating bathrooms, one size rarely fits all. At Kevin Richardson Bespoke, we believe custom bathroom cabinetry should reflect the way you live. From compact en suites to luxurious master bathrooms, ourdesigns are created to work beautifully in real homes, with no compromise onstyle, function or finish. Let’s take a closer look at what sets our cabinetry apart and why more North East homeowners are choosing custom solutions that feel as considered as the rest of their home. Designed Around You and Your Space Every bathroom has its quirks. Awkward corners, boxed-in pipework, or tight layouts often need clever solutions. That’s where custom bathroom cabinetry really proves its worth. We begin by understanding how you use the space, not just how it looks. Do you need more accessible storage?
When it comes to creating bathrooms, one size rarely fits all. At Kevin Richardson Bespoke, we believe custom bathroom cabinetry should reflect the way you live. From compact en suites to luxurious master bathrooms, our
designs are created to work beautifully in real homes, with no compromise on
style, function or finish.

Let’s take a closer look at what sets our cabinetry apart and why more North East homeowners are choosing custom solutions that feel as considered as the rest of their home.

Designed Around You and Your Space

Every bathroom has its quirks. Awkward corners, boxed-in pipework, or tight layouts often need clever solutions. That’s where custom bathroom cabinetry really proves its worth.

We begin by understanding how you use the space, not just how it looks. Do you need more accessible storage? A vanity that works for both morning routines and evening wind downs? Somewhere to hide everyday clutter or display the details you love? Whatever the brief, we create cabinetry to suit your lifestyle, not just the room.

This approach means nothing is wasted. Every cupboard, shelf and drawer serves a purpose. We don’t rely on filler panels or flat-pack dimensions. We design a layout that works with your home, enhancing both flow and functionality.

Built to Be Beautiful and Long-Lasting

Custom should never feel complicated. Instead, it should feel considered. That starts with better materials, cleaner lines and finishes that feel right. Whether you choose a floating vanity, tall cabinetry or integrated open shelving, we design, make and fit every element to last.

Next, we focus on the details that elevate the space. We select high-quality materials that stand up to daily use and still look great. We don’t pick handles, worktops, finishes or lighting by chance. Rather, we choose each one for a clear reason: performance, longevity and style.

From there, we keep the process simple. We manage everything in-house, from the first visit to the final fit, so you always know who is in your home and what happens next. As a result, you get a smooth, stress-free experience with one outcome in mind: a beautiful bathroom tailored to your lifestyle.

Case Study: Custom Bathroom Cabinetry in Ponteland

This recent project in Ponteland is a great example of what can be achieved with a custom approach. The homeowners wanted a clean, modern space that made the most of every inch.

We reworked a former bedroom cupboard to create room for a large shower tray and drench shower, using a pivot door to maximise space around the WC. A bold Atlantic Polished Dark Blue feature wall from Westerhope Tile Centre added depth and worked perfectly with the deep blue MyLife Sofia vanity unit.

Cabinetry was designed not just for storage, but to tie the entire room together. From the Carron double-ended bath with VADO filler to the Brant close-coupled toilet and Lusso Grey towel radiator, every decision supported the layout, the function and the finish.

It’s this level of thoughtful design that defines our custom bathroom cabinetry projects.

Explore more of our bathroom designs.

Why Go Bespoke?

At first, off-the-shelf cabinetry can look quicker or cheaper. However, it often misses the mark on fit, finish and day-to-day function. Gaps creep in, clutter gathers, and the style rarely feels like yours.

By contrast, custom bathroom cabinetry puts you in charge. You choose the layout, storage and finishes; we design, build and install. Add soft-close drawers for calm mornings, hidden charging points to keep worktops clear, integrated lighting for better visibility, and open shelving or mirrored recesses for easy access. As a result, every item has a place and your routine runs smoothly.

Crucially, bespoke doesn’t have to shout. Many clients pick calm, neutral tones and classic textures that sit quietly with the rest of the home. With balanced proportions and precise detailing, the room looks refined without fuss.

In the end, you get a bathroom that reflects how you live. With considered design, careful craftsmanship and durable materials, it looks right, works hard and lasts.

Let’s Talk About Your Project

If you’re thinking of redesigning your bathroom or upgrading your storage, custom bathroom cabinetry might be the finishing touch that brings it all together.

We design and install kitchens, bathrooms and interiors across Newcastle and the North East. Every project we take on is completely unique and tailored to the home it belongs in.

A bedroom should work for you – not the other way around. If you’ve ever struggled with awkward corners, or fitted bedroom ideas with limited storage or furniture that just doesn’t sit right, you’re not alone. That’s why more and more homeowners are choosing fitted furniture as a smarter, more tailored option.

At Kevin Richardson Bespoke, we design and install bedrooms that make the most of every inch. While we don’t manufacture the furniture ourselves, our focus is on the layout, planning and fit – so you get a bedroom that looks right, feels right, and functions the way it should.

If you’re on the lookout for practical, stylish fitted bedroom ideas, here’s what we recommend.

Why choose a fitted bedroom over freestanding furniture?

Standard wardrobes and drawer units rarely make full use of your space. You’re often left with wasted wall height, unused corners, and an overall look that doesn’t quite pull together.

Fitted furniture changes that. Built to the shape and size of your room, it’s designed to sit neatly around alcoves, low ceilings and any quirks the space throws at you. That’s especially useful if your home has loft bedrooms or unusual layouts, which many in the North East do.

We’ve worked on lots of bespoke bedrooms North East wide – from small master suites to shared family rooms – and the results speak for themselves. Storage improves. Flow improves. The room just works better.

Fitted Bedroom Ideas That Make a Difference

Here are a few fitted bedroom ideas that we regularly use to help clients get more from their space:

Full-Height Wardrobes

Taking wardrobes all the way to the ceiling gives you a surprising amount of extra storage. Ideal for seasonal clothes, bedding or suitcases – and it keeps the space looking neat.

Alcove Storage

Got an unused nook or an awkward wall? These are ideal for built-in drawers, open shelves or hanging space. Instead of squeezing furniture in, we build storage that feels like it belongs.

Low-Level Units

Fitted drawers or cupboards under windows are a great use of otherwise dead space. They’re subtle, tidy and help avoid a cramped feel.

Matching Finishes

We often design matching bedside tables, dressing tables and headboards that coordinate with your wardrobes. It gives the room a calm, balanced look without going over the top.

These fitted bedroom ideas can be adapted for rooms of all shapes and sizes. The point is, nothing’s off the shelf – everything is fitted to your home, your needs, and how you actually use the space.

Bedrooms That Reflect Your Routine

Our design process always starts with a chat about how you use the room. What do you need easy access to? What doesn’t get used often? Where do you get ready in the morning? The answers to those questions shape how we plan the layout.

Some of the things we regularly include:

Pull-out storage for shoes, bags or accessories

Slimline shelving for smaller rooms

Soft-close drawers (a must for early mornings!)

Built-in lighting to keep things bright inside wardrobes

This isn’t about adding gimmicks. It’s about making sure your bedroom works smoothly – so your clothes, shoes and day-to-day essentials are exactly where you want them.

Local Service, Personal Touch

We’re proud to be a local team working across the North East, with a strong reputation for well-fitted, thoughtfully designed bedrooms. From Durham and Newcastle to Sunderland and surrounding areas, we’ve helped hundreds of homeowners make the most of their rooms.

Our clients often come to us with a vague idea and a tired-looking bedroom. After a bit of planning and a few smart layout tweaks, they end up with something that feels completely different. Warmer. Neater. Easier to live with.

And that’s really what we aim for. No upselling. No generic solutions. Just a practical, well-fitted space that you enjoy being in.

If you’re looking for inspiration or help with bespoke bedrooms North East, we’ll guide you through the options – no pressure.

From Concept to Completion

Once the design is agreed, our in-house fitters take care of the rest. We handle everything – layout checks, materials, installation and the finishing touches, keeping mess and disruption to a minimum.

Even though we don’t make the furniture, we make sure it’s fitted with care. Edges are clean, doors are aligned, and everything feels like it’s meant to be there. It’s that attention to detail that sets us apart.

Ready to Plan Your New Bedroom?

If you’re browsing fitted bedroom ideas and thinking about updating your space, we’d love to hear from you. Whether it’s a full redesign or a few changes to improve storage, we can help.

We all want a kitchen that works hard, looks good and helps us enjoy the time we spend in it. For some people, that means layout and lighting. For others, it’s about storage or easy cleaning. But increasingly, it’s the appliances and extras – the kitchen gadgets – that really make the difference.

At Kevin Richardson Bespoke, we design kitchens around how people live. That includes integrating smart, reliable and often surprisingly simple tech that adds value to everyday routines. Whether it’s boiling water at the touch of a button, keeping wine perfectly chilled, or cutting cleaning time in half, these kitchen gadgets aren’t gimmicks – they’re things our clients use and appreciate every single day.

Why Kitchen Gadgets Matter in a Bespoke Space

Designing a kitchen isn’t just about doors and drawers. It’s about how the space works once you’re actually using it. That’s where well-chosen kitchen gadgets really shine.

We work with trusted names like AEG, Bora, Quooker and Kaelo because they prioritise thoughtful features over flashy trends. Everything is selected with our clients’ real-world needs in mind. If a gadget doesn’t make cooking, cleaning or entertaining easier, we’re not interested.

So, what counts as a gadget worth having? Here are some of the standouts we regularly recommend.

Our Favourite (and Most Useful) Kitchen Gadgets

Quooker Tap
Forget kettles. A Quooker tap gives you boiling water instantly, straight from the sink. It can also be paired with a CUBE unit to provide chilled filtered and sparkling water too – all from a single spout. It’s one of the coolest kitchen gadgets we fit, and one of the most appreciated once it’s in.

BORA Hob with Built-in Extraction
If you want a clear view across your kitchen and a quieter cooking experience, BORA’s downdraft hobs are a game changer. No overhead extractor, no steam clouds, and no lingering smells. Just clean lines and powerful performance.

AEG SteamCrisp Oven
Adding steam to your oven might not sound revolutionary, but it completely changes how food cooks. Roasts stay juicy, bread gets better crusts, and veg keeps its colour and flavour. The AEG SteamCrisp is proof that the coolest kitchen gadgets don’t need to be complicated.

Kaelo Wine Cooler
Pop your bottle into a flush-fitted Kaelo chiller, and it’ll keep it at the perfect temperature – dry, silent and ready for every glass. It’s one of those gadgets you don’t know you need until you’ve used it. Then you wonder how you managed without it.

Two more kitchen gadgets worth knowing about

AEG ComfortLift® Dishwasher
It may be a good one to mention the AEG ComfortLift. The bottom drawer of the dishwasher lifts up and locks in place, making it easier to use with less bending down. The AEG ComfortLift® is the first dishwasher in the world that lets you gently slide and lift the lower basket upwards. With a dishwashing machine designed around your needs, you can unload more efficiently and stack more effectively. Dishwashing has never been easier with our range of smart and eco-friendly dishwashers.

BORA QVac
The BORA QVac is a built-in vacuum sealer designed to extend the shelf life of food and reduce waste. It has three main functions: vacuum sealing, resealing bottles, and marinating. The QVac is installed below the countertop, saving space.

Vacuum Sealing: It removes air from vacuum bags and boxes, creating an airtight seal that preserves food for longer and maintains its taste and appearance. This is particularly useful for raw and cooked food, including fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, sauces, soups and stews.

Resealing Bottles: The QVac can reseal bottles of liquids like wine or oil, keeping them fresh for longer after they’ve been opened.

Marinating: The marinating function uses a special ring placed on a vacuum box to allow marinades to penetrate food quickly and deeply. This significantly reduces marinating time from hours or days to just minutes.

Making Gadgets Work for You

We don’t believe in loading up a kitchen with tech for the sake of it. The best kitchen gadgets are the ones that match how you cook, clean and entertain.

Some clients want smart ovens and connected fridges. Others prefer simple but powerful appliances that are easy to use and clean. Either way, our job is to guide you through the options – not to confuse you with sales talk or technical jargon.

As an AEG Premier Partner, we have access to exclusive products, extended warranties, and ongoing training. That means when we recommend something, we know exactly what it does – and why it’s the right fit.

We’ll walk you through features in plain English. We’ll show you how to use your new tech, and we’ll install it so it blends into the kitchen you’ve planned. The result? A space that not only looks good but also works beautifully, day in, day out.

It’s Not Just About Cooking

These kitchen gadgets aren’t only about making meals. They’re about making your kitchen a more enjoyable place to be.

Want chilled sparkling water from your tap? Done.
Want to keep a bottle of rosé cool while you’re eating? Easy.
Want to stop banging your head on an extractor hood while you’re cooking? Sorted.

The coolest kitchen gadgets aren’t always flashy. Sometimes they’re just the things that help everything run more smoothly. And when they’re integrated into a kitchen that’s been properly designed around your life, they really come into their own.

Trusted Brands, Local Expertise

We’re proud to partner with appliance brands we trust – AEG, Bora, Quooker and Kaelo – and we’ve built long-standing relationships that allow us to pass on genuine value and insight to our clients.

From helping you pick the right combination of gadgets to demonstrating how they work, we’ll support you through every step of your kitchen project.

Ready to Upgrade Your Kitchen?

If you’re thinking about a new kitchen and want to explore the latest in reliable, well-designed appliances, we’d love to help. Whether you’re a keen cook, an entertainer or just want to make life a bit easier, we’ll suggest kitchen gadgets that suit your needs, not just the latest trend.

Pop into our showroom, give us a call or book a consultation – and see what difference the right tools can make.

A spa-inspired bathroom is a bathroom designed for daily relaxation, combining calming colours, layered lighting, natural textures and considered layouts so the room functions as an everyday retreat rather than a purely practical space.

If you’re dreaming of a bathroom that helps you truly switch off, you’re not alone. More homeowners are moving away from purely practical designs and investing in calming, wellness-focused spaces. A spa inspired bathroom brings that sense of everyday luxury into the home. It offers a peaceful escape that is tailored to your style and how you live.

At Kevin Richardson Bespoke, we design and fit bathrooms across the North East and surrounding areas that reflect both personality and purpose. Whether you’re starting with a blank canvas or transforming an existing space, we help you create a relaxing bathroom that feels carefully considered and easy to live with.

What Makes a Spa-Inspired Bathroom Different?

A spa inspired bathroom is about balance. It brings together comfort, style, and thoughtful function. It’s not about adding unnecessary extras. It’s about choosing the right elements that create calm and make everyday routines feel better.

From soft lighting and smooth materials to open-plan layouts and natural textures, we design bathrooms that feel like a retreat. And because every home is different, every design is too. We work with you to understand your preferences, your lifestyle, and the way you want the room to feel.

Calming Colours and Textures

A good colour scheme plays a big part in creating a relaxing bathroom. Many clients lean towards warm, neutral tones. Soft greys, white, taupe, and subtle greens help make the room feel more open, light, and calm.

We have designed bathrooms using large format marble-effect tiles to reflect light and set a clean foundation. In one project, a green herringbone feature wall was the perfect complement to classic Carrera white tiles, finished with brushed brass details to add a soft sense of luxury.

Texture is just as important as colour. Wood-effect tiles add warmth, anti-fingerprint cabinetry is practical and sleek, and quartz worktops offer a smooth, durable surface. These small choices come together to create a calm and elegant atmosphere, perfect for a relaxation bathroom.

Lighting That Sets the Tone

Lighting changes everything. A well-lit bathroom feels more spacious, but it can also help create a calming mood. We go beyond standard ceiling spots and include features such as LED strip lighting in niches and mirrors, PIR sensor lighting for softer nighttime use, and adjustable tones for different times of day.

In one spa-style layout, we left the bath-end recess unlit, perfect for evening wind-downs. In another, the mirror featured contactless controls and memory lighting that moved between cool and warm tones depending on what was needed. These small touches all contribute to a relaxing bathroom that works for your day-to-day life.

Walk-In Showers and Clever Layouts

Walk-in showers are a popular choice, and with good reason. They look clean and modern, and are easy to maintain thanks to their minimal fittings. We add niches for toiletries, so everything has a place, and use one large pane of glass for easy access and minimal cleaning.

We always think carefully about layout. Placing larger fixtures such as the bath or shower further from the entrance makes the room feel more open. We’ve even moved walls and windows in some homes to maximise space and light. This kind of planning makes a big difference to how a spa inspired bathroom looks and feels.

Bespoke Units That Make It Work

We bring our fitted cabinetry expertise into bathroom design. From floating units and sit-on basins to towel storage and wall-hung options, every detail is built around your needs. You can choose from a wide range of door styles, colours, and textures to make the look your own.

In one example, we designed a two-drawer graphite unit with a black quartz worktop and ceramic basin. It was paired with a matt black tap and matching tile trims to keep the look consistent. Finishes such as black, brushed brass, gun metal and even bronze are now being chosen more often, and we reflect those choices in the finer details like flush plates and radiators.

Ready to Design Your Own Relaxation Bathroom?

At Kevin Richardson Bespoke, your bathroom starts with an idea. Whether it’s a colour you love, a style you’ve saved online, or just a feeling you want to recreate, we help bring it to life. No two bathrooms are the same, and that’s why our process starts with you.

We design and fit bathrooms that are not only beautiful, but practical too. If you’re looking to create a relaxing bathroom, we’ll work with you to make the best use of your space, with quality materials, smart layouts and simple touches that make a big impact.

If you’re ready to explore how a spa inspired bathroom can transform your home, we’d love to hear from you.
